Back-row iPad → Caroline at 17 → 3 years of quiet → top 10.
Shane Boose — sombr (SMB) — grew up Lower East Side, trained as a vocalist at LaGuardia High School, and has been releasing bedroom singles since “Nothing Left to Say” (Oct 2021). Industry found him at 17; audience found him at 19.
The timeline (what actually happened)
Oct 2021 — “Nothing Left to Say” (self-recorded bedroom) REPLICABLE
Starts as SMB — initials as name — writing on iPad in class. No label, just SoundCloud/TikTok drafts.
Jun 2022 — “Caroline” goes viral on TikTok 17 yrs
30–40M streams, labels in inbox next morning. He chooses Warner Records but negotiates SMB imprint — keeps ownership thread.
2023 — LaGuardia dropout → LA; EP In Another Life (Tony Berg) INFLECTION
Moves to Los Angeles after signing early 2023. EP co-produced with Tony Berg (known for keeping bedroom imperfections even after Sound City players). Press strong, commercial quiet.
Late 2023 — Writes “Back to Friends” & “Undressed” in bedroom REPLICABLE
Songs kept rough, reverb-soaked. The disco groove for one started as a late-night joke — kept, not polished out.
Dec 27 2024 — “Back to Friends” officially released WAIT
Does not chart immediately. This is the key: release ≠ virality. TikTok teases begin weeks later.
Early 2025 — TikTok teases flip the switch MECHANIC
Chorus of “Undressed” teased before March 21 2025 drop = 9.5M views, most reactive tease yet. “Back to Friends” and “Undressed” both enter Global 200 + Hot 100 concurrently. “Back to Friends” enters Hot 100 Apr 12 2025 → peaks #7.
Mar 21 + May 13 2025 — “Undressed” single + pop radio SEQUENCED
Single via Warner/SMB, then US pop radio push. Not day-one. Music video (Gus Black) May 8.
Aug 2025 — Debut album I Barely Know Her ONE-TIME WINDOW
4 singles deep: “Back to Friends”, “Undressed”, “We Never Dated”, “12 to 12” (third top 50). Tops Spotify Global Weekly in July. Grammy Best New Artist nom caps the run. Now 400M+ monthly streams platform-wide.
Three facts that matter more than myth
- 1The gap was 3 years. Caroline (2022) → Hot 100 (Apr 2025). Most quit at month 6. He used Warner’s runway to iterate, not to blow up.
- 2Tony Berg kept the bedroom. World-class players at Sound City layered on top of raw demos — imperfections stayed. That's a production ethic you can copy without the budget: keep the demo vocal.
- 3SMB imprint = ownership leverage. Signing at 17 without an imprint would have been a loan. SMB made the later breakout monetizable.
Cost sheet
| Cost | What it bought |
|---|---|
| Dropped out of LaGuardia at 17 | Full-time bedroom writing, LA move |
| 2 quiet years post-signing (2023–2024) | Craft + Tony Berg relationship + SMB setup |
| Loop fatigue risk (TikTok indie pop) | Narrowed lane = top 10 when it hit |
